One of our local public schools has something called ‘Breakfast with a Book’ every once in awhile.  When my homeschooled kids heard about this, they started having school envy and wished that they were public school students.  I wasn’t going to go down that road again (the road of wondering if I should put the kids in school or not)  so, not to be outdone by the local grade school, I started planning for our own Homeschool Breakfast With a Book.

I found out that the school lays out books on all the cafeteria tables and the kids get to come early to school that morning, pick out a free book, and have breakfast (a donut!) with their parents.

I can do that and I can probably provide a better breakfast than a donut.  Don’t get me wrong, I love donuts…..that’s donut with an S at the end. Several donuts with some coffee makes the perfect breakfast but A donut? A single donut? For kids starting their school day?  That’s it?  Come on….. I think I might have breakfast issues…..I’m pretty insistent that my kids have a good breakfast each day.

So, anyway! This week I really lucked out and found about 25 books at our Goodwill store that seemed right up my kids’ alleys.  You really can’t go wrong at 35 cents per book.  Perfect.  I was all ready to try out this Breakfast With a Book thing.

On Saturday morning, before the kids got up (which is really early since my kids don’t understand the concept of sleeping in yet), I put all the books out on the dining room table and got breakfast (homemade gluten free honey and almond granola with bananas) ready.

My nerdy little crew LOVED it!  They loved getting to pick out a book and they loved getting to eat while they read. I actually had to tell them to put their books down after I noticed that breakfasts weren’t being eaten after 30 minutes.  I told you, I have breakfast issues.

It was a fun and different way to start our day.  I haven’t asked the kids if they want to do it again, but I think we may have discovered a new favorite Saturday morning tradition.
